Diversity Champions of 2012:
13 February 2012 Auxiliary Flotilla 44

Congratulations to Auxiliary Flotilla 44 of Sewaren, New Jersey our Diversity Champion of the Week! The Diversity Champion distinction is bestowed upon individuals or units who have made significant contributions in support of the Commandant's Diversity Strategic Plan and OPTASK Diversity.

When approached by the local Hispanic community of boaters looking for a New Jersey approved safe boating course, Flotilla 44 saw a great opportunity to reach out to a population who, although active in the boating community, was not able to successfully obtain a New Jersey State Marine Police Permit. Initial response to the course was overwhelming ending up with a class of 29 with eight on a waiting list. With the help of a local marina who provided the classroom, two instructors and two interpreters the first class went extremely well. Class participation was excellent with the process being an instructor reading the slide, with an interpreter translating and asking for questions. Although some questions were asked in English, all answers were provided in Spanish to ensure all had a full understanding. At the end of the day, all but one successfully passed the exam and earned their New Jersey Boating Permit. Pictured above, Flotilla Commander Mr. Wilson Santiago interprets during the course.

Auxiliary Flotilla 44's leadership, mentorship, and devotion to duty are exemplary and serve as a great example of the positive impact a small group can have on a community. As a direct result of your efforts and outreach, the Coast Guard is making strides toward achieving the vision set out in the Diversity Strategic Plan. Thank you for your work in championing diversity!
